Oregon has hit 94 deaths from the heat wave, with 57 of the 94 coming from the Portland area. Portland is among the bottom five major Metro areas on air conditioning, with usage rising very fast which is commendable.
The future problem lies with the fact that Oregon has been making itself at risk of power outages. Environmental rules helps close Portland General Electric’s largest power plant, a coal plant due to restrictions. This summer, Oregon lawmakers passed a bill forcing Oregon to relay on more carbon free energy sources (wind, solar) which are more vulnerable to blackouts including heat waves.
