Capitol gains tax to fund lawyers gets Portland blowback

Activists have gathered enough signatures and qualified for the ballot a Multnomah County ballot measure that would create a county adjustable 0.75% capital gains tax to fund a program that provides free lawyer costs for renters. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson and Metro Council President Lynn Peterson have announced their opposition.

Portland is a high tax area because the METRO government has their own income tax, the Multnomah County has their own income tax on top of Oregon State income tax which is among the highest in the nation as a top tax rate.

The tax battle will be on the ballot this May.
