Sen. Bonham: We’re losing Oregon farmers to Idaho

By Oregon State Senator Daniel Bonham

An alarming report shows that farms are moving their operations out of state to the state of Idaho. Wrought with a difficult business environment, paired with increasing regulations – our state has lost their way when it comes to taking care of our farmers.

Farm-to-fork is not just a catchy headline. Our farming operations are literally what puts food on our tables. From delicious fruits, to nutritious vegetables and hearty meats – our farmers are at the core of providing the basic needs for our daily lives.

Policies matter. When we over-regulate or mismanage our water, land and the way our industries do business, our industries will seek to operate elsewhere. Shay Myers, chief executive, and general manager of Owyhee Produce, who recently moved operations to Idaho — expressed his frustration with the lack of compromise in Oregon policymaking. When he explained, he dubbed our legislature as a “greedy” employer who does not care about the people working for him. This is deeply unsettling but unfortunately not surprising.

It is necessary that we all to pay attention and serve as a voice for our industries. We need to watch every regulation, assess every appointment and analyze every bill. We need to continue to be vocal about what works and what doesn’t. Our farmers and our industries deserve nothing less.
