Kory Dean Boyd was sentenced to nearly 5 years for being a part of 5-men theft ring who sledgehammered their way through a wall to break into a Portland pawn shop and stole 47 guns.

It is hard to run a shop in Portland when you have thieves destroying walls to break into your business.  Portland has been hit with other such brazen attacks such as thieves using cars to bash their way into a locked business (see Portland’s car ramming trend).

It is also hard to protect against a large team of five robbers who can steal a lot of merchandise very quickly.  Portland’s slow police response time only compounds the problem.   The slow response time is another tragedy of Portland’s defunding police by 100 positions.

Additionally, stealing was made easier in Oregon when state lawmakers reduced the prison time for theft in 2017.

The Oregon U.S. Attorney Office described the details on the 47-gun theft case, “Early that morning, shop owners discovered two large holes in a concrete block wall on the building’s exterior and concrete debris littering the inside of the business. The room exposed by the holes contained dozens of firearms, 47 of which—including pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns—were reported stolen. ATF agents reviewed exterior surveillance video from the pawn shop and observed two vehicles and five individuals present near the holes in the building during the late evening and early morning hours of January 29 and 30, 2022. Two individuals carried a large-handled tool believed to be a sledgehammer. Several other individuals were seen carrying long firearm cases to the vehicles. On February 4, 2022, ATF agents applied for and obtained search warrants for Boyd’s Southeast Portland residence. The same day, agents recovered eight firearms, including seven stolen from the pawn shop, from the residence. Boyd was arrested without incident and admitted to his involvement in the burglary. Boyd’s four accomplices are still at large.”
