The federal government has just approved exploration of a vast lithium (white gold) area along the Oregon and Nevada border.   This lithium deposit, by one estimate, could yield $1.5 trillion in value.   Lithium is the critical mineral used in cell phones, computers, electric vehicle batteries and a lot of military equipment.  This is why both the Trump and Biden administration have been ambitious about getting this project approved.

Yet, the area of the exploration and mining would take place in a key mating area for the sage grouse bird. This sets up for a showdown among environmentalists who have a record of shutting projects down in the NW.

Exploration drilling would be involved in 168 sites across 7,200 acres of BLM land in both Oregon and Nevada.
