METRO sends $250M tax to ballot for homeless

This the METRO regional government approved sending a quarter billion dollar tax measure to the May ballot to raise funds for homeless.

The tax hits both businesses and higher income earners.

First, the tax is an income tax as it hits Portland-area taxpayers (Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas) with a 1% tax on their income above $125,000. The $125,000 threshold of $125,000 is also where the State Income Tax bracket moves from 8.75% to 9.9% making the $125,000 a high taxing point. Joint filers are under a $200,000 threshold of this METRO tax.

The tax includes a 1% business tax (over $5 million) on their revenue. This business tax is only on their tax revenue within the three-county metro area.

The $250 million Metro tax would create a 20-person tri-county homeless services coordination plan to implement the fund dispersion.
