Here comes the 5% gas tax

By Taxpayers Association of Oregon

Oregon’s gas tax will be increasing by 5% effective January 1, 2024.  Oregon’s gas tax went up in 2018, 2020, 2022 and now 2024 as enacted by HB 2017 seven years ago.

What are Oregonians getting for the gas tax increase?   TOLLS!

That’s right, after four gas tax increases, Oregon may be getting as many as ten toll booths along I-5 and I-205.

Politicians will tell you that the gas tax is not paying enough because of better fuel efficiency vehicles.  Yes, but HB 2017 also included a car sales tax, a bike tax, two auto fee increases, a truck tax increase, and a new payroll tax to pay for transportation.

That is 7 tax increases (gas tax, car tax, bike tax, truck tax, auto fee #1, auto fee #2, payroll tax) since 2017 that have raised $5 billion over 10 years for transportation and the response by politicians is that we are out of money just 6 years later and we need to set-up 8 tolls to raise even MORE money.

Want to have a say in tolls in Oregon?

Then sign initiative petition #4 that gives voters the right to vote on tolling projects they have to live under.
