With Friends Like These, Who Needs Enemies?

Ever since President Joe Biden announced he was running for the presidency, critics, including me, have questioned whether he has the mental acumen to serve in the most powerful job in the world. In most instances it was a wrong headed, knee-jerk reaction to his age, with the exception of people like me who attributed his short comings to his lifetime of general stupidity, self aggrandizing lies, and general phony demeanor. In point of fact, in August 2020 in a column entitled “Joe Biden and Senility” I detailed a number of Biden incidences and concluded:

“But the point is that Mr. Biden’s tall tales, gaffes, and plagiarism are not new and, therefore, are not a sign of aging. They are, in fact, a continuation by Mr. Biden to make a dull man appear to be smart, to be heroic, to be everything that he is not. Mr. Biden is as phony as his hair plugs, his cosmetic surgery, his Potomac tan and his “brilliant” white dental work.”

Later I acknowledged his cognitive decline and detailed the signs of such decline including:

• 1. Memory loss, generally noticed by the near and dear ones
  2. Difficulty in communication, especially finding the right words to communicate
  3. Reduced ability to organize, plan, reason, or solve problems
  4. Difficulty handling complex tasks
  5. Confusion and disorientation
  6. Difficulty with coordination and motor functions
  7. Loss of or reduced visual perception
  8. Agnosia

While there is a likely correlation between age and cognitive decline they are not concurrent. In other words there are men and women with remarkable mental acuity into their late 90’s while others begin to show cognitive decline in their 60’s. Contrast former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger with current Vice-President Kalamata Harris.

I have written this not so much to pour salt into Mr. Biden’s wounds but rather to remind the readers that all of this has been visible for years and has accelerated since Mr. Biden took office. More importantly it has been visible to those who have surrounded Mr. Biden on a daily basis including members of his Cabinet, the Democrat leadership in both houses of Congress and the leaders of the public employee unions – particularly Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the entire cadre of leader of the notorious Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Not only were they aware of the day to day cognitive decline of Mr. Biden they engaged in a conspiracy of silence about his true condition.

But it is the silence of the mainstream media – the broadcast and cable giants, the national newspapers and even the international press outlets – that is most disturbing. Run down the roster of talking heads from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, National Public Radio (NPR), add the heads of the major newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, etc.) and finally the so-called “fact checkers” (Snopes, Rueters, etc.). If they did not know via observation of Mr. Biden cognitive struggles then their respective owners should fire them. If they did know and continued to accept verbatim every cover up and “talking point” emanating from the White House or the Democrat National Committee they have totally failed in their respective roles as journalists.

I say that because journalists enjoy a unique and protected status superior to the average person. The courts have carved out exceptions in the name of the right to a free press guaranteed under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. It is a necessary right in order guard against government abuse and chicanery. So when those organs of journalism engage in looking the other way to the abuses of government, including the health and well-being of senior members of the government, they have violated the trust of the American people and, more importantly have done violence to the very purpose for which they were granted a unique constitutional status. It is even worse when they coordinate with the government to hide the truth amid a blitz of knowingly false stories, excuses and deception. Instead of being a watchdog against government abuse, in most instances they have become lapdogs and even worse in some instances as a lead dog – setting and pushing a narrative of their own creation and triggering political concurrence out of fear of being targeted next.

The responses of some of the leading talking heads in the immediate aftermath of Mr. Biden’s publicly displayed cognitive decline were stunning. Chris Wallace (CNN), Joe Scarborough (MSNBC), Joy Reid (MSNBC), Chuck Todd (NBC), Sonny Hostin and Sara Haines (two of the harridans of The View) etc., all feigned surprise at Mr. Biden’s condition and performance and several basically declared that it was over for Mr. Biden. How could these self-proclaimed experts on all things political miss the obvious deterioration of Mr. Biden cognitive abilities? I doubt they did. They are so partisan that they simply continued the narrative pushed by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on a daily basis.

It was disgusting. And I don’t many Mr. Biden’s performance, I mean the “holier than thou” response of the very people who aided and abetted the Biden facade.

But watch. As quickly as these backstabbers turned on Mr. Biden they will turn just as quickly to his defense to maintain the DNC narrative. There may be a holdout however in the form of MSNBC’s Jake Tapper. According to PBR Business & Politics (July 2, 2024:

“CNN anchor Jake Tapper balked at President Joe Biden’s surrogates who have been relentlessly gaslighting Americans over last week’s nationally televised debate debacle, serving up a brutal fact-check on the liars.

“In a stunning turn for one of the debate’s moderators that one X user described as ‘Hell freezes over,’ Tapper called out the Biden loyalists who are trying to convince people to believe them and not their own lying eyes and ears that told them that the emperor has no clothes.

“In an added twist, Tapper even nicely invoked George Orwell, a man who perfectly envisioned Biden and his party in the classic dystopian novel ‘1984.’

Tapper told viewers that Biden’s handlers planned an upcoming high-profile interview – a tightly controlled setting – to convince voters he doesn’t have dementia as well as a call with White House apparatchik Jen O’Malley Dillon assuring party leaders all will be well.

“’There is a pattern, a discernible pattern, of Democratic officials seemingly trying to convince you, the public, to not believe what you saw and what you heard with your eyes and with your ears on Thursday night,’ he said, rolling clips of some of Biden’s mental misfires from the debate.”

I couldn’t say it better and God knows I tried.
