“fake” ballot box photo … oops it’s real

We were prepared to share the recent media story about a fake ballot box discovered in Vancouver.   See KOIN’s “Clark County warns voters of ‘ballot harvesting’ sites with fake drop boxes”.

Before we repeated the alarm, we looked deeper into the story.

First, we noticed that the Clark County Elections office said the ballot box was not illegal nor stated that it was misleading or fraudulent.   They simply discouraged people from using it.   If it is not illegal nor misleading, then is it really fake?

It may not be an official government ballot box site but that doesn’t make it unlawful.

Second, the ballot box site turns out to be a massive homeschool center called the Firmly Planted Family Center.

The Ballot Box site is protected as it is indoors and manned.

It is held at a school.  Local schools are common places for election ballot boxes — why not here?

Even more interesting, is the fact that the site was promoted to be used in response to the arson of an outside Vancouver official ballot box (see video here).

Citizens wanted a safer/indoor/human monitored option for which Clark County did not provide for all their locations.

This is an example of the County Elections office sending out an alarm without giving people all of the facts.  This type of incomplete information is what makes voters distrust their elections offices.

As a taxpayer-advocacy organization we want people to have full trust in their institutions, but these institutions themselves need to do their part.

Funny, how you never hear election offices criticize liberal union ballot harvesting efforts.  But once, a innocent homeschool organization does ballot collection they are deemed a fraud and requires a public announcement.  So unfair.
