Kotek should fire-proof Oregon, not Trump-proof

Oregon Governor Kotek began the new year by hosting a closed door meeting with Oregon’s top Statewide elected officials (Secretary of State, Treasurer, Labor Chief and Attorney General) to discuss how to oppose Trump.

Now a new State government  email went out training state employees on how to counter Trump’s initiatives.  Post Millennial reports, “On Thursday, Oregon’s Department of Administrative Services sent an email to its more than 11,000 employees, urging them to complete its “Oregon Sanctuary Promise” training, which teaches employees how to recognize behavior that may be “violating the law” if ICE agents were to approach government employees.”A new training will be assigned to you in Workday (starting Friday, Jan. 17) and I want to explain its importance and the timeline for completing the training. The title of the training is Oregon Sanctuary Promise and it covers Oregon’s laws relating to our status as a ‘sanctuary state.’ Many of you know that Oregon was the first state to pass a law (in 1987) prohibiting state and local police and government from helping federal authorities with immigration enforcement,” wrote Debbie Dennis, deputy director of Oregon’s Administrative Services, in an email.”

At the same time the Oregon Forestry Department got caught being underfunded and needed emergency cash.  Also, at the same time the State Forester resigned under public backlash which included hosting a conference at a luxury resort.

Enough is enough.   Our governor needs to focus on making Oregon fire-proof by clearing out fire hazards from forest floors, increased harvesting, sustaining forest roads from disrepair for fire access and to purchase a firefighting jumbo jet for faster response to wildfires.

There is also this good bill in the 2025 Legislature: Oregon House Bill (HB3103) has been introduce that Directs the State Forester to establish sustainable harvest levels for harvesting timber on state forestland and develop a timber inventory model to inform sustainable harvest levels.
