Politicians load shutdown with 38 new taxes

On election night voters will be fighting nearly 30 new taxes and tax extensions on the ballot totaling over a quarter billion in higher taxes.

• 19 local tax levies
• 8 local tax bonds
• 6 new income, gas, hotel, taxing districts
• 5 local option taxes

Some local governments had mercy and pulled their planned local taxes from the ballot when the virus struck, like Madras’ meals tax and Salem payroll tax.  Others like the tri-county METRO regional government rushed out a new $200 million+ income and business tax within days before the deadline and slopped it on the ballot without even providing basic details on how the funds would be spent or how they would be collected.
