Yesterday the Senate Housing Committee in the State Capitol held a hearing on SB 603 which would provide homeless and low income Oregonians free $1000 payments for a year to use for WHATEVER they wish.

Multnomah County has handed out to the homeless free $500 debit cards and 20,000 free tents while Portland has doled out $3 million in free cash-loaded debit cards (for internet) as well as their own $500 cash loaded debit cards.   Yet homeless increased by 30%!!!

During Covid, unemployment benefits paid people more to NOT WORK than to actually work.  This created the modern day labor shortage crisis which has severely hurt every single industry in America.  Most states saw the damage this was creating and ceased the extension.  Oregon didn’t and our state poverty only grew.

Lawmakers should stop creating poverty and start lifting people out of poverty by rejecting SB 603.

SB 603 reads, “Establishes People’s Housing Assistance Fund Demonstration Program, administered by Department of Human Services, to provide 12 monthly payments of $1,000 to individuals who are experiencing homelessness, are at risk of homelessness, are severely rent burdened or earn at or below 60 percent of area median income”
