Big gas tax/road tax deal narrows to five taxes

The $1 billion to $1.8 billion Oregon transportation package is getting closer to being finalized behind closed doors.  Here is the Capitol rumors on the four items that are likely to make the final list.

• Gas tax increase.  Possibly 10-cent increase.

• Mileage tax.  This would tax vehicles based on mileage driven. There is a Electric Vehicle portion and possible extension to all cars.

• Sales tax (“vehicle transfer tax”) on cars.

• DMV fees increases. Some fees will be 100% increases.

• Recreating a carbon tax program (Cap-Trade) program.  Restructure the Kate Brown version to add funding for wildfires/road projects while connecting to Washington State’s program.

With less than 30 days left to the End of Session, there still is no official bill number on the transportation package.
