After strike, tax hikes, schools see non-stop enrollment drop

Last year at this time, Portland Public schools teachers went on strike that impacted classes for nearly three weeks.  A strike for teachers that were already among the top 13th highest paid in America.

Just five months ago, Portland public schools passed a half billion dollar tax increase.  The Taxpayers Association of Oregon was quoted in The Oregonian at the time “opposition from the Taxpayers of Oregon, who said the district needed to manage its budget better without seeking more funding from voters.”

Now the Portland Public Schools is forecasting 9 years of straight enrollment drop!!!

Kindergarten is already seeing a 5.5% decline.

The decline is a product of parents of fewer children (people having fewer children, no children at all).

It is also the fact that parents with children are moving out of the county to flee high taxes and high crime.

Stop the high taxes!

Raising taxes for less students is insane.

This November Taxpayers Association of Oregon successfully stopped a Portland-area school tax increase (#26-254) in Parkrose where the school was facing a 13% enrollment drop and wanted a massive tax increase.  We also stopped a Bend school tax increase last May (9-167).

College costs are up 38% while enrollment dropped 10%.
